Trainspotting: The Musical is coming to the West End
Irvine Welsh will bring the groundbreaking book and film to life on the London stage
It’s official – Trainspotting: The Musical is set to take to the West End stage. The new musical will be written by Irvine Welsh with music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh and directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger. It promises to defy expectation, transforming the story of the outsiders and rebels into a defiant live show.
Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy, and Kelly will appear alongside an ensemble cast and live band, performing songs from the generation-defining film along with catchy, confrontational original songs from Welsh and McGuinness. More than nostalgia, the musical will breathe new life into the story, and speak to all of us staring down the barrel of an uncertain future.
The production will make its world premiere at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket, with performances starting from 15 July 2026.
Radical, life-affirming and totally fresh, Trainspotting: The Musical promises to invigorate even the most sceptical theatregoers. This will be a theatrical moment London won’t quickly forget.
