Which theatre will Trainspotting: The Musical play at?
The show will make its world premiere at Theatre Royal Haymarket in the heart of the West End, not far from Trafalgar Square.
When will Trainspotting: The Musical come to London?
The musical will play a limited run in London, opening on 15 July 2026 and closing 5 September 2026.
Who’s in the cast?
Newcomer Robbie Scott is set to make his West End debut as Renton. Full casting has yet to be announced, but Welsh has said he was “blown away” by the calibre of talent that they found when casting.

Directing and developing the project is Caroline Jay Ranger, with associate director Denise Ranger. Set and costume design is by Colin Richmond, with lighting design by Ian Scott, video design by Douglas O’Connell, and sound design by Rory Madden for Sonalyst. Stuart Morley is musical supervisor, orchestrator and music director. Christina Andrea is choreographer and additional movement director, and Anne Vosser is casting director.

The story follows a group of unemployed heroin addicts in Leith, with twenty-six-year-old Renton trying to get clean and start a new life. The novel, film and stage play have all received a lot of praise for their handling of tough themes like addiction and poverty.
Is Trainspotting: The Musical based on the book or the film?
The musical is adapted from the 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh, which was longlisted for the Booker Prize. It also draws a lot of inspiration from the 1996 film, widely considered one of the best films of its decade. However, Welsh has stated that the musical is a fresh take on both, presenting the story in a way that responds to present day anxieties as well as the mood of the mid-90s.

The show features original, yet-to-be-heard songs by Welsh and McGuiness.
