Everything you need to know about Love Never Dies
All the information you need on the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera as the concert version comes to London
Love Never Dies, the spectacular sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, is back in London this month in award-winning concert format. For anyone who’s been swept away by the darkly romantic show at His Majesty’s Figure – and to go by the numbers, that’s a lot of people – this concert production offers a glimpse into the future, as the Phantom and Christine are brought into collision once again. Here’s everything you need to know about Love Never Dies as it makes its fated return.
How is Love Never Dies connected to The Phantom of the Opera?
Set ten years after the events of The Phantom of the Opera, this sequel is based on the same central characters: soprano Christine Daaé and the mysterious Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House. Unlike the original, it isn’t based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, but instead explores a new story.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has expressed that audiences don’t need to have seen The Phantom of the Opera to enjoy Love Never Dies – the story stands alone.
What is Love Never Dies about?
When Christine is contracted by the mysterious Mr Y to perform at Phantasma, a new attraction on Coney Island, she is unaware that it is actually the Phantom who has arranged it all. With her husband Raoul and son Gustave, she journeys to Brooklyn, only to be unexpectedly met with her past.
Is it also written by Andrew Lloyd Webber?
Yes, it is. Lloyd Webber began working on the show in 1990, four years after the premiere of The Phantom of The Opera, although he only started writing the music in 2007. However, the lyrics were written by Glenn Slater and not Charles Hart, lyricist of The Phantom of the Opera.
Who’s starring in Love Never Dies?
Jamie Muscato (One Day, The Great Gatsby) and Celinde Schoenmaker (Guys & Dolls, Barnum) will lead the cast as the Phantom and Christine respectively.
They’ll be joined by George Blagden as Raoul, Courtney Stapleton as Meg, Mazz Murray as Giry, Holly James as Fleck, Nic Greenshields as Squelch and Charles Brunton as Gangle.
What theatre will Love Never Dies play at in London?
A concert version of the show is set to be staged at the London Palladium in the West End.
When will Love Never Dies come to the West End?
The show will play just five performances from 16 to 18 October.
How long has The Phantom of the Opera been running in the West End?
Lloyd Webber’s smash hit has been running at His Majesty’s Theatre since 1986. Its sequel returns as part of the show’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
When was Love Never Dies first performed?
The show first premiered at London’s Adelphi Theatre in March 2010.
Who’s on the creative team?
The concert version is directed by Shaun Kerrison with choreography by Joanna Goodwin, set and costume design by Rebecca Brower, lighting design by Tim Deiling and sound design by Paul Gatehouse.
Why should I see it?
If you’ve ever been curious about the next chapter of the West End’s longest-running musical, Love Never Dies offers a unique opportunity to glimpse their future. And with a cast of West End heavyweights taking to the stage, there’s no doubt that the next instalment of Christine and the Phantom’s dark romance will be in safe hands.
