British Basketball’s Fab Flournoy looks ahead to 2017 Cup Finals
An inspiration and a legend, Fab Flournoy would like nothing more than to return to the Barclaycard Arena and lift yet more silverware at what promises to be another exciting and spectacular day at the 2017 Basketball Cup Finals.
It’s a venue and city which still holds special significance for someone whose first chapter on their sparkling journey to becoming the most successful coach in British Basketball League history started in Birmingham.
It’s where the Newcastle Eagles’ play-caller first landed as a player back in the day, not knowing that once he left, he would be back to lift the BBL Cup on more than one occasion as a player-coach of the most dominant franchise in the history of the BBL.
“I love coming to Birmingham and it will always be a big part of my life and still have close friends in the city,” explains Flournoy.
“The atmosphere of the BBL Cup Final each and every year, demonstrates what a great city it is and how much everyone loves basketball and has such a passion for the big occasion.
“Anyone who has ever played at the Barclaycard Arena appreciates what a great venue it is and absolutely everybody pencils the BBL Cup Final into their diaries because it’s the first piece of silverware every season and the reaction of the fans and noise they make is unbelievable.
“Not only that, but Birmingham and the Barclaycard Arena is now the spiritual home of the BBL Cup and a destination that has provided some incredible moments, excitement and games down the years.
“No matter how many times the Eagles might get to the Final, it is never anything less than thrilling for me, my players and the fans – so we will be aiming to be back again in 2017.”
This year, Flournoy and the Eagles will defend their cherished BBL Cup title and will hope that means reaching the Final on what will be another memorable day on Sunday 15 January.
Not least because it will also see a major slice of history made with the first ever Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) Cup Final as part of a terrific double-bill due to be played out in front of almost 10,000 fans.
Fans eager to experience the atmosphere of one of the biggest events in British Basketball should buy early as ticket sales have been increasing year on year and a sell-out crowd is anticipated for 2017.
