Serj Tankian delves into augmented reality with new EP Perplex Cities

The System Of A Down singer hopes to connect closer with his fans via an AR app

Serj Tankian has announced details of new EP Perplex Cities, which when partnered with augmented reality app Aloopa will allow fans to listen along with the singer. Leading up to its release on 21 October, each week a new song will be released via the app, and will show the System Of A Down frontman appearing in the user’s space as he listens along and discusses the track.

Speaking of the launch in a press release, Tankian says “I’m always trying to create new and interesting ways to connect with people via my music […] I love the idea of appearing in the room with someone listening to my music. It’s intimate, fun, and different.”

The EP follows Tankian’s 2021 EP Elasticity, though he also notes a new change of sound in his forthcoming release: “This whole collection of songs within Perplex Cities is a completely different sound than what I’ve done before. More electronic, subtle and deeper in terms of its layers of presentation musically. Perplex Cities gives off an aura that is unique and unlike my previous releases.”
