King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are sponsoring a women’s football team
Anglesea Football and Netball Club now represent the most prolific name in Ausssie psych rock
They already have 23 albums, 14 live records and three EPs, but now King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard also have a women’s football team. Anglesea Football and Netball Club are now sponsored by the Australian psychedelic rock band (as well as by the Onda Foodhouse and Flynn Builders…)
King Gizzard frontman Stu Mackenzie grew up in Anglesea, and was once captain of the city’s local team in the Geelong Junior Football League before shifting his focus to music after an ACL injury. With Mackenzie related to club president Jamie Mackenzie, the sponsorship seemed like a perfect fit – even if the person having to print the band’s name on the new kit might have disagreed.
This is awesome!
My favourite band @kinggizzard sponsors the @AngleseaFNC womens football team and they got cool af shirts!
Need one!
(Maybe sell them in the https://t.co/KUGRD9sLdR shop and give the earnings to the club!? That would be great!) pic.twitter.com/F9IbgYGpQO— Le @[email protected] (@GrischoSchluesi) November 22, 2022
Now joining the likes of Mogwai (Saint Roch’s Primary And Deaf School club), Wet Wet Wet (Clydebank FC), Motörhead (Greenbank under-10’s B team) and The Libertines (Margate FC), King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are now part of a very special premier league of bands with their own teams.
“Oh my god. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard plastered across our back? How bloody cool is that?” laughs AFC player Cassie Harrrison, now the focus of an ABC News profile, as the club’s merch shop is flooded with requests for jerseys.
With The Gizz famous for their non-stop touring schedule as well as their endless string of releases, it’s unlikely the band will be able to play the Angelsea club (right next to Poppie’s Nursey & Café, not far from the caravan park) any time soon. But when they do, expect the whole town to turn out.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are playing The O2 Academy in Brixton on March 22 and 23. Tickets are available here.
