What’s happening this September in theatre

Everything happening on the West End this September that you need to know about

September is a real season of renewal on the West End, with lots of summer’s biggest shows heading out the door. Don’t worry though – there’s a host of exciting dramas taking centre stage whilst we gear up to welcome in our big winter musicals. And if you’re still in a summer mood, you’ve still got a few weeks to catch the season’s most sparkly revivals. Here’s your full guide to the West End this September.

New West End openings

The Rocky Horror Show comes to London this month with none other than Jason Donovan as the glamorous Frank ‘N’ Furter. The cult classic is playing a very limited run at the Dominion Theatre, with performances taking place 6–20 Sept. You definitely won’t want to miss out on this one.

There’s a ton of great drama hitting our stages as well this month. Sam Mendes’ acclaimed family epic The Lehman Trilogy returns to the West End for a limited run at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, with performances beginning 24 Sept. Also returning is the Sean O’Casey masterpiece Juno and the Paycock, which sees J. Smith Cameron and Mark Rylance star in a new revival of the tragi-comedy. Plus, Samuel Beckett’s enduring classic Waiting For Godot comes to the Theatre Royal Haymarket from 13 Sept, with Lucian Msamati and Ben Whishaw as Didi and Gogo.

Tickets on sale now

David Tennant and Cush Jumbo star as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in Max Webster’s new imagining of one of Shakespeare’s darkest and most gripping tragedies. Performances start at the Harold Pinter Theatre on 10 Oct, with tickets now on sale. If you want to watch the story unfold from the best seats in the house, you can secure them with our Premium tickets.

Last chance shows

After many, many magical performances, we’re saying a sad goodbye to Disney’s Frozen, which leaves the West End on 8 Sept. The Wizard Of Oz also heads off on the same day, so there’s a limited amount of time left to see Aston Merrygold and The Vivienne live onstage.

14 September sees a few big productions waving goodbye. Hello, Dolly! with Imelda Staunton will close its doors, as will Kiss Me, Kate with Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J. Block. Kathy and Stella Solve A Murder! also wraps up that day, leaving the Ambassadors Theatre after an acclaimed run.

Next To Normal and Slave Play, two critical favourites, both depart on 21 Sept, so there’s still some time to get in and see them both. Finally this month, The 39 Steps will depart from the West End on 28 Sept, as will Clint Dyer and Roy Williams’ state of the nation plays Death of England.
