Tennessee William’s Summer and Smoke is set to transfer to the West End following its sold out run at the Almeida Theatre.

The transfer will see leads Patsy Ferran and Matthew Needham, who portray central couple Alma and John, continue their roles. They’ll be joined by Eric MacLennan, Nancy Crane, Seb Carrington, Tok Stephen, Anjana Vasan and Forbes Masson.

William’s tale of self-destructive love first opened in Broadway in 1948, making its London debut in 2006 with Hollywood star Rosamund Pike in the lead role.

The latest production is directed by Rebecca Frecknall, running at London’s Duke Of York’s Theatre from 10 November 2018 until 19 January 2019.

Summer and Smoke

Summer and Smoke is set in Mississippi at the start of the 1900s, and follows the passion and desire between neighbours Alma Winemiller and doctor John Buchanan Jr. Together they embark on a dark journey of self-discovery.

The show’s run at the Almeida Theatre was met with critical acclaim, with The Sunday Times labelling it a “shiveringly beautiful production”, and Financial Times celebrating its “spellbinding, stripped-back staging”.

Both Patsy Ferran and Matthew Needham have been commended for their turns as Alma and John in what The Telegraph has called an “unmissable Tennessee Williams revival”.

Summer and Smoke transfers to the Duke Of York’s Theatre in London’s West End from 10 November 2018.
