Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Saunders will unite for a brand new adaptation of the iconic 1992 film, Sister Act.

Sister Act the Musical will run for 39 performances only through August 2020, taking to the stage at London’s Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith.

Academy Award winner (for Ghost) Whoopi Goldberg returns to the role of Deloris Van Cartier 28 years since the release of the iconic film, following the exploits of a nightclub lounge singer forced into a witness protection programme with Saint Katherine’s Parish. Brenda Edwards will be performing the lead role on Thursday matinee shows.

The original film starred Goldberg in the lead role, alongside Maggie Smith and Harvey Kartel.

On stage, Goldberg will be joined by Jennifer Saunders in the role of Mother Superior.

Inspired by Motown, soul and disco, the musical features original music by Alan Menken, who celebrates a Tony Award and eight Academy Awards for the likes of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.

Goldberg is one of a handful of stars to win an EGOT, taking home an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award for her work across stage, screen and in recorded music. She received her Tony Award as a producer on Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2002.

“The original Deloris is back, a little older, a little seasoned, but really still kind of out there,” Goldberg says of returning to London for Sister Act the Musical.

The musical will run for 39 performances only from 29 July 2020 – 30 August 2020.
