Our weekly round up of this week's biggest new tours, shows and events.
As part of a 30-date nationwide tour that runs until October 2018, The Play That Goes Wrong will perform at Blackpool’s Opera House from 7 – 11 August 2018.
A Mischief Theatre production, this gut-busting hit is currently enjoying its fourth year in the West End. Having been launched at a London fringe venue, The Play That Goes Wrong is now staged in the Duchess Theatre where it regularly plays to sold-out audiences. Over the years it’s also racked up an impressive list of awards including the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, the 2016 Moliere Award for Best New Comedy and the 2017 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design of a Play.
The Play That Goes Wrong has also been hailed as “delightful” by Tim Walker of the Daily Telegraph in 2014. He said, “Everything that appears to be going wrong with this West End show is actually going right.”
So what happens in The Play That Goes Wrong? Or, perhaps the better question is just what doesn’t happen? Put simply, this funny production is packed with craziness – think physical comedy and slapstick meet finely tuned farce. The plot follows the antics of the fictional Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society who are trying to stage their latest production, a 1920s murder mystery called Murder at Haversham Manor. However, nothing goes as planned and the hilarious, accident-prone thespians find they have to battle against all odds if they’re going to make it to the final curtain call.
Mischief Theatre’s The Play That Goes Wrong will be part of Blackpool Winter Gardens summer 2018 line-up – joining This Is Elvis, Shrek the Musical, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Titanic the Musical.
A spokesperson for Blackpool Winter Gardens said, “The hilarious show is sure to delight Blackpool audiences young and old. From start to finish, the disastrous play is superbly executed by an extremely talented cast who are sure to have you laughing the entire way through.”
Indeed the West End actors in The Play That Goes Wrong are genuinely talented at appearing to be horrendous performers throughout the murder mystery. Although the touring cast has yet to be announced, you can bet they’ll also be hilarious amid all the brilliantly choreographed mayhem.
In other words, prepare to laugh until it hurts…or until you hyperventilate!
