Harry Potter And The Cursed Child celebrates ten years in the West End with some huge changes

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child is celebrating ten years in London’s Palace Theatre. The two-part play, which opened in the West End on 30 July 2016, has been seen by more than 2.5 million people in its decade-long run – now, the production is shaking things up a bit. Read on to find out what’s changing.
Harry Potter And The Cursed Child acts as a sequel to JK Rowling’s book series, reintroducing us to Harry, Ron and Hermione nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, and following their children through a new adventure at Hogwarts. Written by Jack Thorne, the play is split into two parts, with audiences either returning for the second part later in the same evening or returning the next day to finish the story. Upon opening, it received a record-breaking nine Laurence Olivier Awards, the highest number awarded for a play.
In celebration of the ten-year milestone, Thorne praised “a collective effort, shaped by the passion, creativity and dedication of every person involved in bringing our show to the stage”.
He said: “One of the things that makes theatre so special is the shared experience between the audience and performers who journey through the story together, and to have brought new audiences to the Palace Theatre to have their first theatregoing experience at our show is something we are all proud of.”
Director John Tiffany said: “It has been an incredible 10 years for everyone who has been involved in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, and a joy for us to bring this show to our fantastic audiences in London and around the world.
“We wouldn’t be reaching this milestone without the many brilliant artists, both on stage and behind the scenes, who have all contributed their astonishing talent and unwavering enthusiasm to bring this remarkable story to life at each and every performance.”
Moving forward, the production will combine Part 1 and Part 2 into a single play, something that has already been done on Broadway and in multiple other cities. The final performance of the original two-part production will take place at the Palace Theatre on 20 September, with the show resuming as a single-part play in 9 October.
