Our weekly round up of this week's biggest new tours, shows and events.
Green Day’s American Idiot, which features some of the band’s biggest hits, is heading out across the UK early next year.
Stopping at the Blackpool Opera House from 5 – 9 March 2019, this production commemorates both the 10th anniversary of the award-winning rock musical and the 15th anniversary of the powerhouse album of the same name. It’s returning to the UK on the heels of two celebrated West End runs and a sell-out tour.
American Idiot was initially a concept album by the Southern California punk rockers. Green Day’s frontman Billy Joe Armstrong brought it to life as a rock opera by blending their hit songs with a story about youthful disillusionment and mistrust of government.
The plot follows three boyhood friends – Johnny, Tunny and Will – who are each searching for meaning in a post-9/11 world. Disenchanted with life, they flee the constraints of their hometown for the big city. However, their paths diverge when one friend enters the armed forces and another is suddenly called back home due to familial pressures. On his own, Johnny finds himself seduced by drugs and a dangerous love interest whom he calls “Whatsername”.
First premiering in 2009 at California’s Berkeley Rep Theatre, American Idiot opened on Broadway in 2010 where it ran for over a year. The critically acclaimed production went on to win two Tony Awards as well as a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
As Green Day’s seventh studio release, the multi-platinum American Idiot album has racked up numerous awards. Not only did it take home a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2004, but it also received five additional nominations – for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Group with Vocal, Best Rock Song (for its title track, of course) and Best Short Form Music Video.
For fans of the mega-hit album, the musical features all of the songs in an electrifying score, augmented with other material from the Green Day catalogue. So during the show, you’ll get to hear everything from the blockbuster title track and Boulevard of Broken Dreams to Wake Me Up When September Ends, 21 Guns, Holiday, 21st Century Breakdown and an unreleased love song, When It’s Time.
This epic touring production of Green Day’s American Idiot will be directed and choreographed by Racky Plews. The casting has yet to be announced. But don’t be an idiot and wait to book – or you might miss out!
Tickets for Green Day’s American Idiot at Blackpool’s Opera House Theatre from 5 – 9 March 2019 go on sale from 11:00 on Friday 20 April 2018 at Ticketmaster.co.uk.
