Infamous horror tale The Exorcist is coming to London’s West End, taking over at the Phoenix Theatre from 20 October 2017.

Adapted from the William Peter Blatty novel, The Exorcist celebrated increased notoriety as the 1973 Academy Award winning horror film of the same name, directed by William Friedkin. The screen adaptation has been widely considered as the scariest movie of all time ever since, breaking boundaries in special effects and shock tactics.

The stage production sees film and theatre director Sean Mathias (Bent, No Man’s Land), take on Blatty’s novel for the first time.

Oh please, Mother, make it stop! It’s hurting.”

When the medical profession fails to provide answers to young Regan’s strange symptoms her desperate mother Chris turns to a local priest for help. But before Father Damien can tackle what’s before him, he must overcome his own shaken beliefs, as this fight is for more than just one girl’s soul…

The cast for The Exorcist’s West End production is yet to be announced. The actors will take on the iconic roles portrayed by Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Max von Sydow, and Jason Miller in the film.

Linda Blair made headlines with her portrayal of the possessed Regan, as religious figures attempted to remove her inner demon through a particularly eventful exorcism. William Peter Blatty went on to win an Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay, with The Exorcist also being recognised for its success in Sound Mixing. The horror film also received eight more nominations, including William Friedkin for Best Director, Jason Miller (as Father Karras) for Best Supporting Actor, and Linda Blair for Best Supporting Actress.

The supernatural stage adaptation retells the horror tale, having previously ran at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Alongside director Sean Mathias, The Exorcist welcomes Olivier Award winning designer Anna Fleischle, lighting by Tim Mitchell, composition and sound design by Adam Cork, and illusion design is by Ben Hart.

The Exorcist opens at London’s Phoenix Theatre from the 20 October 2017, with a strictly limited run until 10 March 2018.
