Ruthless! the Musical began its life off-Broadway 25 years ago, with an original cast that featured Laura Bell Bundy (who would later be Tony-nominated for her role in Legally Blonde) and young performers in the shape of Britney Spears and Natalie Portman.

The show features music by Marvin Laird (who later went on to become the musical director for Broadway revivals of Annie Get Your Gun (in 1999) and Gypsy (in 2003) and book and lyrics by Joel Paley. The show won the 1993 New York Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical.

Narratively it tells the story of Tina Denmark – an aspiring 8-year-old child actress – and her mother Judy, a bland housewife who just wants her daughter to be normal. But the beautiful and talented Tina will do anything to play the lead in her school play… anything!

The show goes onto spoof famous Broadway musicals from Mame to Gypsy, as well as iconic Old Hollywood films like The Bad Seed and All About Eve.

As the narrative spins more and out of control (the show is crammed full of fun twists and turns), it becomes a rollercoaster-sharp adventure that asks its audience to question how far they’d go to get what they want?

The move to London comes after an acclaimed Off-Broadway run at St. Luke’s Theatre in New York in 2015.

The show opens in the West End on the 16 March for a limited run of 14 weeks only.
