Inua Williams hit play Barber Shop Chronicles is set to open at London’s Roundhouse next month.

Recently celebrating its 250th performance, the play will run at the North London venue from Thursday 18 July 2019 for a limited time only.

The run marks the first time the play will be performed in London since it made its debut in the city in 2017.

The play originally performed two sold out shows at London’s National Theatre, before heading to Leeds’ Playhouse and then touring across the globe in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, the US and Canada.

Based in a barber shop, where generations of African men have gathered to discuss current events, the heart-warming play takes the audience on a journey from Peckham, to Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Lagos and Accra over the course of a single day.

The cast for the production features existing cast members Maynard Eziashi, Adé Dee Haastrup, Emmanuel Ighodaro, Demmy Ladipo, Mohammed Mansaray, Anthony Ofoegbu, David Webber alongside new cast members Micah Balfour, Okorie Chukwu, Tom Moutchi, Elmi Rashid Elmi and Eric Shango.

Barber Shop Chronicles is directed by the Olivier Award-winning Bijan Sheibani with design by Rae Smith (War Horse).

Alongside Barber Shop Chronicles, there will also be a series of events taking over The Roundhouse during the show’s run. Fades, Braids and Identity will feature a series of talks and exhibitions that champion the stories of diverse artists, and expand on the themes of Barber Shop Chronicles including race, gender and identity to the importance and politics of black hair culture.

Artists confirmed to be appearing at Fades, Braids and Identity include Hot Brown Honey creators Selina Thompson and Ruth Sutoyé, poet Julian Knox and a resident barber from Hackney’s renowned SliderCuts.

Barber Shop Chronicles returns to London for a limited run at The Roundhouse from Thursday 18 July 2019 to Saturday 24 August 2019.
