What to expect at Mamma Mia! The Party

"Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" an ABBA-filled night out with food, theatre and plenty of surprises. Here's what to expect at Mamma Mia! The Party

The sun has come out in the UK after what felt like the most arduous winter in many years – but the temperature still leaves little to be desired. Allow us, then, to take you on a journey* to the Greek isle of Skopelos for a one-of-a-kind ABBA-filled dining experience at Nikos Taverna. (*Not so much a journey as it is a trip to The O2 in Greenwich, but it’s pretty much the next best thing.)

We’re talking about Mamma Mia! The Party: a part-theatre, part-restaurant, all-party experience set to the music from your favourite movie musicals, based on the back catalogue of your favourite band. Meet a whole new cast of whacky characters and spend your evenings (or afternoons for a matinee) having the time of your life. Still unsure? Here’s what you and your party of two, four, six or eight can expect at Mamma Mia! The Party.

The Plot

Now you may be expecting Meryl Streep to reprise her role as Donna, Pierce Brosnan as Sam and Colin Firth as Harry – but that’s not what Mamma Mia! The Party is about. Nikos Taverna, where we set our scene, is owned by the character Nikos, who claims that Meryl, Pierce, Colin and co were all patrons of his Taverna during the film shoot. This is all made “true” with photos of Nikos and various cast members of Mamma Mia! dotted around the tables and stage. Nikos runs the Taverna with Debbie, the chef, and Kate, his new English bride. Kate’s nephew and resident Skopelos bad boy, Adam, is courting Nikos’ only daughter, Konstantina – much to Nikos and Konstantina’s grandma’s dismay. Plus, the Taverna’s oven is on the blink. Fernando, the handyman, is nowhere to be seen. Hijinks ensues. ABBA songs are sung.

Inside Mamma Mia! The Party

The Food

Of course, when in Greece (Skopelos by way of The O2 in Greenwich), eat as the greeks do. The Mamma Mia! The Party menu is a three-course greek meal with braised lamb (or an aubergine and potato moussaka for the vegetarians) as a main, and a Greek lemon cake for dessert. Plus, there is a menu of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments (and we recommend the cocktails. Worth every penny). With a VIP upgrade, your table can also enjoy complimentary wine and goodie bags that include sunglasses, flip-flops, a VIP programme with details of the show and a tote bag. Souvenirs for a trip away!

The Hits

If you’re wondering which of the ABBA songs will get performed, the answer is pretty much all of them. There were ABBA songs that even the most die-hard of fans had never while most of the big classics were part of the final concert-style performances from the actors – where they put on some ABBA-chic gold lamé hot pants and white tank tops, and invite you to sing along. And all the hits will play again at the end when the Nikos Taverna courtyard is turned into a dancefloor. That’s right, it’s dinner, theatre, and a literal party.
