5 Top Tips for Freshers Week

Our handy Freshers survival guide will help you get through your first foray into university nightlife with ease

As brat summer comes to a close and we enter demure autumn, enter Freshers Week 2024. The time where university students get their first taste of the events their new home has to offer, meet new people, and start making memories. Whether you’re starting university this September or returning for another year, here are our top tips for surviving Freshers Week.

1. Make Friends

With everyone in the same boat and nervous to meet new people, Freshers is the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone and make some new friends. The social calendar is packed with events designed to bring people together; from run clubs to club nights, there’s something for everyone.

The connections you make during Freshers can shape your entire university experience, and there’s no better way to bond with your new housemates and course buddies than dancing the night away to a DJ or singing along at a gig.

2. Familiarise yourself with the area

Moving to a new city can be both exciting and overwhelming, but Freshers is the ideal time to explore your new surroundings. There’s always something happening, whether it’s on campus, at a local venue, or even in someone’s kitchen. Make sure you get out and have a taste of the local nightlife scene, with many of the top local venues hosting events exclusively for university students.

3. Prepare yourself for Halloween

Whether you’re into spooky costumes or just love a good party, the Halloween-themed events are not to be missed. It’s the perfect excuse to get creative, dress up, and dive headfirst into the Freshers festivities. Universities and local clubs often put on some of the biggest and best nights of the year, from horror-themed music nights to costume contests. Secure your tickets fast because these events are guaranteed to sell out.

4. Pace yourself

With so many exciting events crammed into such a short space of time, it’s tempting to try and do everything – but remember to pace yourself. Freshers is a marathon, not a sprint. Plan out which taster sessions, gigs, and club nights you’re most excited about, and make sure to grab your tickets in advance. This way, you can enjoy the best events without burning out too early. Balance the wild nights out with some downtime, and you’ll be able to make the most of the entire experience.

5. Stay Safe

As you explore your new city, staying safe should be a top priority. The excitement of all these events can sometimes lead to letting your guard down, so it’s important to look out for yourself and your friends. Stick together, keep your belongings secure, and know your way back home. Most events have staff on hand to ensure everyone has a good time, so don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
