Things To Do: On Ice
All the best frozen festivities taking place across the UK this winter
If we get very, very lucky, sometimes all that winter rain solidifies into something a little more magical. If not, there’s still plenty of ice-based activities happening across the UK this winter season, no matter what the weather outside. Whether you’d rather watch the professionals glide across the ice or give it a go yourself, here are all the frozen attractions to keep an eye out for this year.
Disney On Ice Presents: Road Trip Adventures
The new On Ice show from Disney offers a magical escape to far-off lands with all your favourite characters. Sail off to Motunui with Moana, parade through Agrabah with Aladdin and explore the Pride Lands with Simba, all rolled into one icy adventure. As always, you’ll be treated to dazzling visuals and stunning musical numbers, in an adventure that the entire family can enjoy.
Disney On Ice Presents: 100 Years of Wonder
That’s right: there’s not one but two spectacular shows from Disney skating around the UK this winter. This one features all your favourite characters from films such as Moana, Frozen, Finding Nemo and Toy Story, as well as the characters from Encanto appearing on the ice for the very first time. It’s a classic, generation-spanning Disney experience, perfect for the festive season.
Glide At Battersea Power Station
Three interconnected ice rinks form this gigantic skating experience at Battersea Power Station, perfect for anyone craving a turn about the ice this winter season. An idyllic date night or the ideal festive activity with friends, Glide is a London staple, and an experience you definitely won’t want to miss. And if your skating leaves something to be desired, there’s a range of bars and restaurants nearby to nurse your bruises in afterwards.
Brighton Royal Pavilion Ice Rink
Brighton’s Royal Pavilion once again hosts a magical skating experience this year, with two beautifully lit rinks set against a stunning backdrop. Hosting skaters since 2010, the rink offers plenty of space to build confidence and show off your skills before you head to the rink-side bar and kitchen afterwards to warm up. Plus, it’s the country’s only ice rink powered by renewable energy.
Sheffield Steelers
If you’re looking for a little more action, then head down to the Utilita Arena Sheffield to watch the Steelers face off against top ice hockey teams throughout the winter season. Founded in 1991, the Sheffield Steelers are competing in this year’s Champions Hockey League season, giving chills to Utilita from September all the way through to April.
Torvill & Dean: Our Last Dance
Need a little inspiration for your next trip to the rink? Look no further than skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, whose long and highly decorated careers have placed them among the very biggest names in the sport. British, World, European and Olympic champions, the duo are best known for their extraordinary decade run between 1984 and 1994, which saw them place no lower than first in any competition. Their very final tour sees them celebrating and cementing their legacy, with performances across the UK.
