Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House opens in August
Here's what you can see under the stars.
Film4 will transform the Edmond J.Safra Fountain Court at Somerset House, London into a beautiful open-air cinema this August.
Over fourteen summer evenings between Friday 9 – 21 August 2019, audiences will be able to experience some of the most well-received films in cinema history under the starry night sky, projected onto the capital’s largest outdoor screen and with cinema-quality surround sound.
Here’s the full line up of films on offer:
9 August 2019 – Black Panther
Ryan Coogler’s Marvel Superhero epic Black Panther broke boundaries and box office records when it was released last year. The movie is also the first superhero film to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Watch the trailer below:
10 August 2019 – Nicholas Cage double bill: Wild At Heart and Mandy
One of the most iconic movie stars of a generation, delve into two of Nicolas Cage’s arguably lesser known but very impactful performances, with the David Lynch directed Wild at Heart and the 2018 supernatural thriller Mandy. Watch the trailer for Wild at Heart below:
11 August 2019 – The Princess Bride
Rob Reiner’s classic romp was made to be enjoyed under the stars. The 1987 romantic comedy is one of the most enduring and beloved films from the decade. Watch the trailer below:
12 August 2019 – The Matrix
It’s now been 20 years since (spoiler alert) Neo took the red pill. The film introduced the world to bullet time, solidified Keanu Reeves as one of the biggest movie stars on the planet and changed how action movies would look forever. Watch the trailer below:
13 August 2019 – God’s Own Country
The Yorkshire set God’s Own Country tells the tale of the romantic love between two farm workers. Josh O’Connor, who has been cast as Prince Charles in the forthcoming series of The Crown stars as Johnny, a local farmer who falls for Romanian migrant Gheorghe (Alec Secreanu). 14 August 2019 – This Is England
Shane Meadows This Is England is a coming of age examination of England in the early ’80s, focussing on how skinhead culture became adopted by white nationalists. The movie earned Meadow’s a BAFTA Award in 2007 for Best British Film. Watch the trailer below:
15 August 2019 – Straight Outta Compton
The biopic of rap group N.W.A, Straight Outta Compton is a no holds barred examination of how five kids from Compton became one of the biggest music acts of a generation, whilst also putting America’s racial injustice problems under the spotlight. Watch the trailer below:
16 August 2019 – Double Bill: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset
Experience the first two parts of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy. The romantic films are set and shot 10 years apart from each other, and both star Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in the lead roles. Watch the trailer for Before Sunrise below:
17 August 2019 – Double Bill: Get out and They Live
Experience a night of horror and sci-fi with Get Out and They Live. From the mind of Jordan Peele, Get Out examines racist attitudes in America when an aspiring black photographer portrayed by Daniel Kaluuya goes to meet his white girlfriend’s parents. 18 August 2019 – Clueless
Maybe the most quotable film of the ’90s, the romantic comedy Clueless follows Cher (Alicia Silverstone), as she endeavours on her quest to find the perfect boyfriend whilst juggling school life in the ultra-rich Beverley Hills area of Los Angeles. Watch the trailer below:
19 August 2019 – Reservoir Dogs
The film where it all began for auteur Quentin Tarintino. Revisit his super stylish debut, which launched one of the most fascinating filmmaking careers in history. The film has been described by Empire as the “greatest independent film of all time.” Watch the trailer below:
20 August 2019 – The Piano
Widely considered a masterpiece of cinema, The Piano took home the Palme d’Or in 1993. Jane Champion’s film stars Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin, who booth took home Academy Awards for their performances. Watch the trailer below:
21 August 2019 – Inna De Yard
Peter Webber’s new film Inna De Yard will have its UK premiere at Film4 Summer Screen. The documentary follows the reggae legends Ken Boothe, Winston McAnuff, Kiddus I, Cedric Myton and Judy Mowatt, as they group together to record an album of unplugged hits. Watch the trailer below:
