What to expect at Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical

Get ready for an automatic, systematic, hydromatic experience at Battersea Park as the beloved film is brought to life like never before

There aren’t many ways to reinvigorate a cultural phenomenon like Grease but Secret Cinema London has done just that. At Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical, you’re not just watching the action, you’re part of the action, as the the movie is brought to life through a full cast, live band, and full on recreations of the movie’s most memorable sets. While some people assume that Secret Cinema is just a simple screening of a classic film with a few extra bells and whistles, but it’s a lot more than that.

This summer you can enter the “hallowed” halls of of Rydell High, join the AV club with Eugene Felsnic, become a cheerleader with Patty Simcox, swoon over “summer lovin” with Sandy and Danny and build a car with the T-Birds. Roam the fairgrounds with your mates or split a milkshake at Frosty’s Palace with your dates – the world of Grease is yours for the taking.

Looking for directions to Rydell High? Battersea Park’s outdoor venue EVOLUTION LONDON is home to Secret Cinema’s immersive Grease experience. Located on Queenstown Road in Battersea Park, EVOLUTION is a short walk away from Battersea Power Station, which can be accessed via tube, or from bus routes that service Chelsea Bridge from Victoria and Sloane Square tube stations.

You’ll know it as soon as you see it, with big red and white “Rydell High” signage, and friendly on-site staff greeting you on entry. From the beginning to the end of your experience, there are plenty of photo opportunities on the outdoor fairground – where all attendees get a complimentary token to go towards rides and carnival games. The Plot

The plot and the songs of Grease vary from stage productions to the 1978 film to the 2016 FOX TV Special, which allows every iteration to be special and gives superfans the chance to enjoy niche details in the Grease-verse. The boys who were once known as the Burger Palace Boys in the original 1971 Chicago production are now the leather-clad T-Birds, Marty’s passing comment about writing to her various overseas boyfriends in the film is actually a full song, ‘Freddy My Love‘, which was the central song in the sleepover scene before ‘Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee’. A lot of the original characters were based on the Polish-American and Italian-American working class teens in Chicago, before Grease was taken to Broadway and the Silver Screen.

Now, the Grease we mostly know and love is a little removed from the specificities of Chicago and its landmarks, and is more of a fantasia of a generic 50s Americana culture. Perhaps this is what allows us all to relate and imagine ourselves as various characters in the movie. But Secret Cinema’s Immersive Movie Musical experience allows details from both the film and stage productions to shine in-between major scenes, with actors playing the lead cast on stage in tandem with the film, but also roaming around the set with attendees. Jocks pass notes to cheerleaders through audience members, Rydell High students fall in love and break up while Sandy sings ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ – and Rizzo and Kenickie flirt over fries at your table if you’re a lucky VIP ticket holder. Plus, extra points if you’ve dressed up because you’re more likely to be chosen as a member of the cheer squad, the track team, the Rydell High choir, or a participant in the school sock hop.

The Food

For a milkshake that will bring every T-bird and Pink Lady to the yard, you can actually go to the famous Frosty’s Palace – the setting of many an adolescent Grease date night and Teen Angel’s ‘Beauty School Dropout’. Each food stall in the fairgrounds and inside the reconstructed set is decked with a full menu of American diner and carnival classics, adding further to the immersive experience. Relive the heyday of poodle skirts, jukeboxes, and the mid-century fast-food boom, while reliving your favourite parts of the movie. We guarantee there’s no other cinematic experience like it.

The Hits

Grease is full of iconic songs, even forgotten throwaways like ‘Those Magic Changes’ or ‘Blue Moon’ (the latter being a nod to the original production’s track, ‘Moonin’), and the immersive experience makes sure to pay tribute to all the hits and in-between bits throughout the screening of the film. Superfans can rejoice at the needle-drops that allude to important upcoming scenes, e.g. the live band performing a rendition of ‘La Bamba’ before the Pink Ladies walk into the school cafeteria singing the same song in the film. There are plenty of hidden gems, special surprises, and yes, there may or may not be flying cars during the pivotal moments… See for yourselves at Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical, booking until 7 September 2025.
