Watch Nelly Furtado fly away with Drake in Toronto

Furtado made her first live appearance in five years to sing I'm Like A Bird and Promiscuous

Friday night saw Drake perform at All-Canadian North Stars in Toronto, held at the Canadian rapper’s own History venue. The event celebrated Canada’s hip hop and R&B stars from years past, with Drake paying tribute to heroes like Kardinal Offishall and the late Sidhu Moose Wala and performing with his ex-girlfriend Keshia Chanté and Toronto rapper k-os.

But the moment that brought the house down was when Drake introduced Nelly Furtado. There was no hyperbole in his heartfelt introduction: “I don’t care how loud you sang tonight, right now I need you to sing as loud as you possibly can, because this right here, took a lot. I love each and every one of you… but this next person’s music changed my life so much. I love her with all my heart.” The beat to ‘Promiscuous’ dropped and the whole room promptly went insane.

Furtado hadn’t performed live since stepping away from the stage in 2017, making her appearance all the more surprising. Drake even hinted at the efforts needed to persuade her, but if she needed any further encouragement, the roar that greeted ‘I’m Like A Bird’ should do the trick. “This is your choir tonight, they’ve got beautiful voices,” Drake promised.

Furtado traded lines with the audience before beckoning Drake over to join in for the chorus. Complex Canada described it as “the purest, most joyful moment of the night. Maybe of the decade.” Hopefully this will lead to more regular sightings.
