Now the band have confirmed on Instagram that the track will be released on 22 August.

“Last spring, the band reconvened at Long Pond to begin writing and recording new music that we’ve been working on ever since,” they wrote on Instagram. “‘Weird Goodbyes'” featuring Bon Iver felt like the right track to share first and is one of a handful of new songs we’ve been performing on tour this summer. We’re so grateful to our friend Justin Vernon for joining us on this song.”

The track has been included in recent setlists on some of their US dates and is likely to feature on The National’s headline sets at Edinburgh’s Connect Festival and London’s All Points East later this month.

Vernon has previously worked with the The National’s guitarist Aaron Dessner on their project Big Red Machine, as well as featuring on Taylor Swift’s Evermore, which Dessner produced.
