Solange is composing a score for the New York City Ballet
The singer-songwriter has teased the involvement of some of her “most frequent musical collaborators”
Solange Knowles has come a long way since her days dancing backup for Destiny’s Child. Three years on from the release of her fourth studio album, When I Get Home, the singer-songwriter is be combining her passions for both dance and music into a new challenge as she composes a score for the prestigious New York City Ballet.
The piece is being written for performance by a chamber ensemble and is also said to include “some of the composer’s most frequent musical collaborators”. Solange will also work with choreography Gianna Reisen, who became the NYCB’s youngest choreographer in 2017. The title of the piece has not yet been announced. Solange’s work will premier on 28 September at the Lincoln Centre as part of NYCB’s Fall Fashion Gala. There will also be additional performances in October and May.
This may be the first time Solange has composed for a ballet company, but it is not the first time she has explored performance art. In 2017, the singer used her album A Seat A The Table to construct a show entitled An Ode To that combined live music with elements of dance and theatre, set in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
