Rachel Zegler to make her West End debut in Evita at the London Palladium
The actress will play Eva Perón in Jamie Lloyd’s version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved musical
After a highly praised run as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet on Broadway, Rachel Zegler is heading to the West End for the first time to play Eva Perón in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita. The production will open at the London Palladium on 1 July and play until 6 September, with full cast and crew yet to be announced.
Zegler said: “Evita has been such an important musical to me since I was a little girl, when my dad and I would sing “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” together on my back patio. The opportunity to bring Jamie Lloyd’s singular, visionary ideas to life onstage is an honour unlike any other. The stage has always felt like home to me, and I can’t wait to make my West End debut in such great company.”
Jamie Lloyd of The Jamie Lloyd Company said: “I am so excited to be collaborating with the brilliant Rachel Zegler on Evita. She is a phenomenal talent, and I am delighted she will be making her West End debut as the iconic Eva Perón.”
Evita focuses on the life of Argentine political leader and former actress Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. The musical first opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in June 1978, returning in 2006. The Jamie Lloyd Company first staged their version of Evita at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2019.
Rachel Zegler shot to fame making her film debut as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story for which she won a Golden Globe award. She has since appeared in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and is set to play Snow White in Disney’s live-action remake of the animated classic.
