Paul Heaton celebrates his 60th birthday with free drinks for customers at 60 pubs

The Housemartins and Beautiful South frontman put £1000 behind the bar of each venue.

Paul Heaton chose to celebrate his 60th birthday this Monday by spreading a little northern hospitality. He shared on Twitter that his original intention had been to embark on a bicycle tour, performing at 60 pubs across the UK and Ireland. However, due to Covid-caused recording delays, these plans had to be rethought.

“Instead, I’ve decided that the next best way to celebrate this coming of age is to handpick 60 pubs across the UK & Ireland and put a given amount of money behind the bar of each one,” he wrote his statement. “Then, both regulars and yourselves can enjoy a drink on me… The hope is to bring people together on the day, whilst recognising that many folk who bought my records or showed me support over the years, could do with a wee party, as we come out of Covid and hit potential financial struggles.”

The venues were handpicked by Heaton and dotted across the UK and Ireland, with fans able to find pubs pulling free pints from Edinburgh to Cornwall. Heaton kept in touch with fans on Twitter as grateful messages flooded in from all over and people shared pictures of friends and families enjoying a drink together.

Heaton shot to fame in the ‘80s with band the Housemartins, before forming the Beautiful South in 1988. In 2014, Heaton released his first album with Jacqui Abbott, with whom he will play a string of dates this summer.
