Kate Bush is No.1 on iTunes and it’s all thanks to Stranger Things

‘Running Up That Hill’ soared up the charts as millions tuned in to Stranger Things 4 this weekend

If you haven’t had chance to get stuck into Stranger Things 4 these last few days, worry not! There are no spoilers here. But if you’ve been hooked on the new season then chances are you’ve had Kate Bush’s 1985 track ‘Running Up That Hill’ running around your head since Friday. Well, you’re not alone.

Since the season dropped on Netflix, streams for ‘Running Up That Hill’ have increased by 153% on Spotify, causing it to overtake her previously most popular song ‘Wuthering Heights’. Now the track has hit No.1 on iTunes in the US and is all over TikTok.

It’s not the first time that Stranger Things has caused a resurgence in popularity for an 80s track. ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’ by the Clash was prominent in Stranger Things 1, whilst a duet to Limahl’s ‘Never Ending Story’ in the Stranger Things 3 finale increased Spotify streams of the song by 825%.

Cast member Winona Ryder, who plays Joyce Byers in the show, has apparently been angling for the Duffer brothers to include Kate Bush in the soundtrack for quite some time. “I’ve been obsessed with her since I was a little girl,” she confessed at the Stranger Things 4 premiere. “I’ve also for the last seven years been dropping hints on set, wearing my Kate Bush T-shirts… She’s a hero of mine.
