The worlds of baking and indie music folded together last night in a surprise but sweet collaboration between past The Great British Bake Off contestant Jürgen Krauss and Michelle Zauner, aka Japanese Breakfast.
The Philadelphia indie pop band headlined a sold-out O2 Forum Kentish Town and, towards the end of the set, Zauner acknowledged that watching the show (which she referred to by its American title, The Great British Baking Show) helped her and her crew during the uncertainty of touring post-lockdown, and that her favourite contestant was Jürgen. She then introduced the German baker in question, who appeared sheepishly at the side of the stage with his trombone for his own showstopper on the disco track ‘Slide Tackle‘, from 2021’s Jubilee.

The beloved Series 12 semi-finalist also made matcha white chocolate shortbread for Zauner and her band, while on social media the Philadelphia musician admitted she’d made bootleg ‘Be Sweet’ t-shirts with his face on them: “Last year in our covid bubble we watched Great British Bake Off on the bus and fell in love with Jürgen and rooted for him every Friday. He brought us so much joy when touring was such an anxiety ridden unknown. We made bootleg Jürgen shirts to celebrate the end of tour.”
