Arctic Monkeys share first song from new album The Car
The beloved indie group will release their seventh studio album on October 21
Fresh off the heels of their Reading & Leeds headline performance at the weekend, Arctic Monkeys have released ‘There’d Better Be a Mirrorball’, the awaited lead single from forthcoming LP The Car. The track is their first new song in four years, and is accompanied by a video directed by Alex Turner, which you can see below.
Last week the Sheffield band officially announced the title, release date and track list of their seventh album, just 24 hours after debuting another new track ‘I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am’ live in Zurich, though this is yet to be officially released. The Car will be released on October 21, arriving 20 years after the band was first formed in Sheffield.
Front man Alex Turner has said that the record aims to bring the band’s sound “back to earth” following 2018’s Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.
“You have to follow your instincts in the same way you did in the first place. In that way, it does all feel like it’s connected to us 20 years ago in the garage when it was pure instinct,” he told The Big Issue.
“I think we’ve got closer to a better version of a more dynamic overall sound with this record,” he said, speaking on how the record would differ from the last album. “The strings on this record come in and out of focus and that was a deliberate move and hopefully everything has its own space. There’s time the band comes to the front and then the strings come to the front.”
Arctic Monkeys and long-time collaborator James Ford worked on the record at Butley Priory, a converted monastery in rural Suffolk.
“There’s a bunch of Led Zeppelin and Stones records where they were in this house in the country and then they went and sorted it all out and overdubbed it elsewhere,” said Turner of the decision to record at the Priory. “We went there in the summer, took all the equipment, got the raw material and then took it on elsewhere.”
