Slowthai is the self-proclaimed “King Of Northampton”. The 23-year-old hip hop artist is having one hell of a year, releasing multiple critically-revered tracks all of which carrying important messages about the current state of society and politics in Britain. The young rapper has garnered passionate followers in his short career from accurately pointing out flaws in the system, but simultaneously inspiring a sort of positive punk attitude. He claims “hate me, you must hate the truth”, and that from the a certain point of view there’s “nothing great about Britain”

Tyron Frampton AKA Slowthai started his music journey in an estate just outside Northampton. He began freestyle rapping with the older kids in his neighbourhood. A pensive lad who ended up using his childhood nickname as his rap moniker, he was known as “Slow Ty” because he looked like he was in another world most of the time. This proved advantageous as the young MC saw an improvement in his rap skills when he started writing his own lyrics down and quickly realised that he could stand out from the crowd with more abstract lyricism.
Fast-forward to 2017 and Slowthai has made waves in the UK hip hop scene representing Northampton and inspiring young artists from small “forgotten” towns all over Britain. A couple of quality releases got the attention of tastemakers, before his I Wish I Knew EP had the likes of The Fader, Noisey, Crack and more raving about his unapologetic, hard-hitting lyrics delivered through tight memorable songs in a modern, grimey garage sound.
Things have kicked up to yet another gear for the artist in 2018. Slowthai supported Irish hip hop sensation Rejjie Snow on his UK tour in March before embarking on a headline European tour of his own in September. He’s a big talking point off the back of this tour due to his unpredictable live show; a sold-out gig at The Underworld in Camden was particularly memorable. The high-octane live performance is a must see – expect Slowthai to be stripped down to his boxers stage diving whenever appropriate … which is evidently often.
Essential Tracks
You need to hear the epic track Ladies where we see Slowthai at his most vulnerable, tackling the issue of toxic masculinity.
The striking visuals for Polaroid match the malevolent messaging in the track as Slowthai reminisces about the time before he became a rapper.
The latest release from Slowthai is the Mura Masa produced Doorman. The track contains some dark social commentary backed by a beat conveying immediacy and raw punk energy.
