On his latest single Fade, Brighton-born singer and songwriter Freddie Long examines the isolation caused by changing circumstance. Penned before the government-sanctioned lockdown, its theme now rings truer than ever. Inspired by Long’s internal battle between belonging and his desire to shake things up, the track in part refers to his switch from socialite to studio, and the separation this causes. Fade is the soundtrack to overcoming FOMO, and being self-aware enough to understand that missing out can often be the right course of action. It’s about embracing the real you, and hoping that those close to you accept the change.
“Fade is about battling with personal anxiety, trying to forget and move on,” Freddie explains, “understanding that problems will never fully fade away. It’s about learning to live and manage to eventually overcome them.”
Backed by collaborators Joe Warriner, Ian Janco and Dane Etteridge, Freddie Long presents this introspection against guitar-led melodies, having established himself with his debut Blessed Or Cursed EP last year. Having already appeared at the likes of The Great Escape, Sundown Festival and BBC Introducing Live, Long is now gearing up for the release of his sophomore EP, These Darker Days.
His love of performing has also seen him team up with friends and fans during lockdown, hosting various live streams from his kitchen, including a very special live version of Fade alongside Joe Warriner and Joe Smithson. By stripping his sound right back, Long pushes the apprehensive lyrics to the forefront, cementing them as a staple of his relatable and emotive sound.
