Melbourne’s G Flip toured the US as a drummer while still in her teens, then locked herself in a room, taught herself how to produce and dropped one of the biggest tracks of the year. What have you done this week?
G Flip, real name Georgia Flipo, makes hook-laden and blissed-out electronic pop. The Australian rising star started drumming aged just 9 years old. Inspired by the life-long dream of her drum teacher Jenny Rose Morrish who died tragically young, Georgia toured the US with Aussie band EMPRA. By her own admission “Flip” became a bit of a hermit on her return in an effort to teach herself how to produce.
Supporting herself by teaching drums in the evenings, Georgia spent the rest of her time experimenting with some fairly rudimentary equipment. Nearly a year to the day the song was written Georgia uploaded the track About You to Triple J Unearthed. Australia, followed quickly by music fans in rest of the world, went G Flip crazy.
With an ever growing online fanbase it wasn’t long before people started demanding live shows. Flip had some surprises there too in the shape of her self-built animated drum kit Je Ro Mo. Named in tribute to her late drum teacher the kit was built with the help of a friend in just a couple of days and adds a fourth dimension to G Flips live show.
It’s early days for G Flip, with just two track releases under her belt including the massive Killing My Time, available to listen to above.
Killing My Time was released earlier in the year as a follow up to About You, a track picked up by Australian radio staple Triple J.
“To be honest I wasn’t planning on releasing this song as the next single but… I wrote it the week before About You so it’s pretty fresh in the mix,” G Flip told the station’s Gen & Lewis of Killing My Time.
