It was the night that the English football team kicked their path to World Cup success into high gear, and Sunset Sons took to the stage in central London to celebrate the upcoming release of their new EP River, which is out on 27 July via LAB Records. It’s the band’s first new music in two years and follows their top 30 album Very Rarely Say Die.

Their new single Love Lights was released earlier in the month with Jed Laidlaw explaining: “Love Lights, it’s a song about relationships. Not necessarily boy-girl, but just about honesty and how people can change their minds like the weather. It’s just about keeping moving forward, which is the general theme around The River EP”.

Having headlined venues like KOKO and O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, this intimate show at Electrowerkz was one special treat for their fans. Here’s what we learned from seeing Sunset Son live.

The River EP sounds incredible

While it still carries that signature Sunset Sons sound, the band’s new material is darker and heavier than what you’ve heard before. It is obvious that they have grown as a band in the last two years and their music in return has also matured. Latest single Love Light especially is a spark of genius that has the entire audience dancing with joy. The River will take this band to new heights and songs like Running Man – with their huge choruses – are what will take them there.

Football and music DO mix

It may be coming home but it’s undeniable that England beating Columbia in the penalty shootout lifts everyone’s spirits this evening. In fact, Sunset Sons only take to the stage shortly after 10PM when the final score is in because the band, much like the entire venue, is glued to their phones for the penalties. Loud cheers for every scored goal and the final euphoria as England make it through to the quarter final ring out. In the end, Sunset Sons take the stage to their fans chanting the legendary Lightning Seeds track and pack a seventeen track set into the rest of the evening.

Going to a gig? You better be camera-ready

Lights, camera, action? Well, sort of. Not quite as glamourous but still just as much fun. The band decided to film parts of their music video for EP title track The River at Electrowerkz, making the special night even more memorable for all those attending.

Sunset Sons appreciate their fans…

On this July night, Sunset Sons shower their fans with love – a never-ending sea of genuine thank you’s and gratitude for their support washes over the sold-out crowd. After a change in line-up for the band and a two year wait for new material, the indie trio are clearly humbled by the appreciation they receive from the crowd. This mutual affection raises this Sunset Sons show to a whole new level, leaving everyone with a show they won’t soon forget.
