Earlier this month, Yungen took to the O2 Academy in Birmingham as part of Spotify’s Who We Be show. Joined on the bill by Jaykae, Mabel, MIST, Ms Banks, Sneakbo, Yungen rounded off the celebration of British urban music, following Who We Be’s inaugural event in London last year.

Who We Be in Birmingham precedes a confirmed show at London’s Alexandra Palace later in the year. Last year’s huge show welcomed stars Giggs, Dizzee Rascal, J Hus and Cardi B, with this year’s line-up yet to be revealed.

The event is based on the Spotify playlist of the same name, curated by the in-house urban team led Austin Daboh. The playlist is one of the UK’s most popular for the streaming service, with upward of 250,000 subscribers.

Yungen has found early support in Spotify, with his massive hit Bestie being playlisted on the platform before anywhere else. The song went on become an international smash, and propelled Yungen into the mainstream.

We caught up with the man himself at Who We Be in Birmingham to talk about his new record with Jess Glynne, Mind On It, breaking into the charts, new music, and performing live.
