The 11 best RÜFÜS DU SOL songs
Why settle for a top 10 when you can have a top 11? Ahead of the upcoming RÜFÜS DU SOL tour, we rank their biggest and best tunes
Formed in Sydney in 2010, the Australian trio RÜFÜS DU SOL are famous for their euphoric live sets. Featuring Tyrone Lindqvist on vocals and guitar, Jon George on keyboards, and James Hunt on drums – RÜFÜS DU SOL first captured attention with their blissful synth-laden debut, Atlas, in 2013. They continued to build their fanbase with subsequent albums: Bloom (2016), Solace (2018), Surrender (2021) and Inhale/Exhale (2024).
Thematically, RÜFÜS DU SOL’s music is often about hope, love or loss. In the space of a few minutes, they can take listeners from deep introspection to full transcendence – A talent that’s connected with audiences worldwide. Following the release of their latest album, Inhale/Exhale, the band has announced a world tour. As we wait for RÜFÜS DU SOL’s arrival at London’s Crystal Palace on Saturday 5 July 2025, here’s our pick for their 11 best songs.
11. ‘Make It Happen’
(Surrender, 2021)
Written during the early days of the pandemic, Surrender is an album centred on resilience. While the world felt very dark, ‘Make It Happen’ brought the uplifting, hopeful energy we all needed. With the anthemic, arm-lifting mantra, “love can change your life, love can make it happen,” complimented by a spine-tingling children’s choir (a nostalgic nod to Justice), ‘Make It Happen’ really captured the euphoria of first experiencing live music and community following months of isolation.
10. ‘No Place’
(Solace, 2018)
Lindqvist’s delivery of the line “There’s no place I’d rather be” has lived rent-free in our heads for years. The lead single from RÜFÜS DU SOL’s third album is a moving song about finding “home” – not in a place, but in love. Driven by a brooding electronic beat, echoing synths, and Lindqvist’s haunting vocal performance, ‘No Place’ slowly builds to an emotional crescendo.
9. ‘Take Me’
(Atlas, 2013)
I have a theory that there’s a direct correlation between a country’s sunshine hours and the mood of their music; i.e. Australians soak up a lot of sun and therefore produce some of the brightest house music in the world. Throughout their career, RÜFÜS DU SOL gradually explored darker sounds (notably after they left Australia – albeit to L.A.), but their debut album Atlas is sonic sunshine. Layered with both tropical and deep house influences, ‘Take Me’ captures the playful, energetic side of RÜFÜS DU SOL. Regardless of the actual weather this tune will transport listeners into a warm summer night.
8. ‘Underwater’
(Solace, 2018)
Balancing introspective lyrics with a pulsing beat, ‘Underwater’ has an emotional depth that’s profoundly resonated with fans. The “underwater” metaphor alludes to drowning in overwhelming emotions, and the track’s sweeping melody takes you deeper with each verse. Delivering a vulnerable and powerful message about seeking help to stay afloat, it’s no surprise ‘Underwater’ is an absolute fan favourite.
7. ‘Lately’
(Inhale/Exhale, 2024)
Sprinkling trance on their signature deep house, ‘Lately’ is an undeniable earworm. With the hook “feels like I’m learning how to love again,” it’s a track that’s relatable to anyone who understands the highs and lows of love – a core theme for RÜFÜS DU SOL.
6. ‘On My Knees’
(Surrender, 2021)
With a bassline that feels like it belongs in a 90s rave, the tech-house infused ‘On My Knees’ is a darker, edgier sound than we’ve heard from RÜFÜS DU SOL before. The anxiety-inducing tune explores inner conflict and vulnerability. Usually performed under flashing red lights, ‘On My Knees’ makes for a thrilling moment of madness in RÜFÜS DU SOL live sets. The gritty, ominous vibe perfectly underscores the emotional weight of the lyrics.
5. ‘Treat You Better’
(Solace, 2018)
With RÜFÜS DU SOL, it’s never just dance music – it’s dance music that makes you feel something real. Blending an ethereal soundscape with sing-along lyrics that tug at the heartstrings, ‘Treat You Better’ addresses neglected relationships with loved ones. It’s a track that makes even the most emotionally reserved want to embrace their friends on the dancefloor and preach kindness. Intimate and soulful, the song reaches a pinnacle when the band’s friends join in as a choir, really driving home that sense of connection.
4. ‘You Were Right’
(Bloom, 2016)
Ah, ‘You Were Right’. Who doesn’t love to hear those three words? A reflective track about relationship regret, ‘You Were Right’ pairs melancholic lyrics with a warm, infectious melody that will pull at your emotions. Bloom was the album that catapulted RÜFÜS DU SOL on to the world stage and ‘You Were Right’ is an absolute highlight.
3. ‘Sundream’
(Atlas, 2013)
RÜFÜS DU SOL do profound tunes very well, but honestly, sometimes life’s just not that deep. It’s the simple laid-back joy on ‘Sundream’ that really gets me going. The upbeat tropical house number transports listeners to a paradise-like state. ‘Sundream’ is one track we’ll never skip.
2. ‘Alive’
(Surrender, 2021)
Earning the GRAMMY for Best Dance Recording in 2022, ‘Alive’ delivers a harrowing sort of gratitude. Written during the pandemic, it celebrates resilience and the gift of life, even in bleak times. With soaring vocals, the track combines emotional depth with an anthemic electronic sound, creating one of Surrender‘s most powerful, cathartic moments. Live it’s an absolute crowd favourite.
1. ‘Innerbloom’
(Bloom, 2016)
If RÜFÜS DU SOL is a church, ‘Innerbloom’ is the holy grail. It’s like the ‘Hallelujah’ of dance music anthems. While the number one spot can be contentious on these lists, ‘Innerbloom’ is almost universally regarded as RÜFÜS DU SOL’s magnum opus. A nearly 10-minute journey into introspection, growth, and emotional release. The track uses layered synths, intricate rhythms, and haunting vocals to create an immersive experience that gradually crescendos, leaving a lasting emotional impact on listeners that very few songs have achieved.
