Last year, Northampton-born singer-songwriter Billy Lockett emerged with the swirling Burn It Down. Gathering close to two million streams, and celebrated by new music curators BBC Introducing, it launched Lockett’s budding career. A milestone in his rapid rise, tonight he sits front and centre of the grandiose Bush Hall at his piano, in front of a sold out crowd.

Joined by his guitarist and drummer, Lockett still presents a stripped back affair. The vast majority of his set is soaringly introspective. There are hints of contemporaries, from the falsetto vocals of James Vincent McMorrow to the musical experimentation of Bon Iver at his most serene. Ultimately, Lockett delivers haunting melodies with a present twist. It’s a combination set to break him further into the mainstream conscious.

Billy Lockett - Who I Am (Official Audio)

As the tones glide around the West London venue, Billy Lockett brims with personality. In the midst of his subtle tones lies a vibrant character, with the occasional between song joke cracking through the musically dense atmosphere. His appreciation of tonight’s audience is obvious; an appreciation returned in kind.

There’s a long road ahead for Lockett, who is yet to release his debut full-length. Completing his tour before heading into the studio, his sound continues to grow. He cleverly walks the fine line between innovation and comfort, to a brilliant effect.

Billy Lockett will play a headline show at London’s beautiful Union Chapel on the 15 February 2018. Tickets are available now through Ticketmaster.co.uk.
