Playlist: Happy birthday, Sir Elton John!

Today the legend that is Sir Elton John turns 70 years-old and that’s more than enough reason to celebrate.

It’s no secret that pop-icon Elton John’s landmark birthday will be a big shindig – and he’s going all out. There’ll be a big party in Los Angeles with none other than Lady Gaga, godmother to his two sons, set to perform (can we come?). In honour of the big day, we take a look at Elton’s biggest hits. Time to bring out the champagne and warm up those vocal chords, there will be singing.

Circle of Life (with the cast from The Lion King)
In 1991, Tim Rice was brought in to write the lyrics to Disney’s The Lion King movie, and when asked who he would recommend to write the music, he suggested Elton John. “Elton was my first choice… I didn’t think they could get him, to be honest, but they did,” he said at the time. And we sure are glad they decided to go with it.

I Just Can’t Wait To Be King
One of our favourite tunes from The Lion King is this upbeat number. You’ve probably heard Simba sing it in the movie or live on stage at Disney’s The Lion King musical, but have you ever heard Elton John sing the original?

I’m Still Standing
80s goodness with this track off Elton John’s Too Low For Zero record. We know you’re tapping your feet right now! Can we also just take a moment to appreciate that eighties fashion.

Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (with Kiki Dee)
Let’s go back one more decade to the 1976 hit Don’t Go Breaking My Heart with the adorable Kiki Dee.

Hakuna Matata (from The Lion King)
Probably one of the best good-mood tunes that has ever existed, we all love it and we all want to sign along to it with Timone and Pumbaa. And obviously Sir Elton John wrote the music for it.

Rocket Man
If anything would be Elton John’s anthem it would probable be this song. It embodies everything that makes him an icon, from sound to lyrics to video.

Can You Feel The Love Tonight?
Find someone to hug, because you’ll want to. This beautiful track from The Lion King gives you all the feels and takes us straight to the pridelands.

I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues
“Don’t wish it away, don’t look at it like it’s forever. Between you and me, I could honestly say that things can only get better.” We can’t be the only ones who know this song by heart from beginning to finish?!

And don’t forget, we have a few limited tickets left to see Sir Elton John across the UK this summer for his Wonderful Crazy Night Tour. Plus, there’s no better time to see Disney’s The Lion King musical.
