Meet the acts playing TGE Presents… at the Old Blue Last

London: don't miss Lucy Tun, DellaXOZ and Fräulein in the next round of free shows from The Great Escape

In case you missed it, Ticketmaster New Music have paired up with The Great Escape to showcase some of the hotly tipped bands performing at this year’s festival. Held at the Old Blue Last in East London, the shows are free and are the perfect way to begin planning your busy festival schedules.

There are only two more TGE Presents… shows ahead of the The Great Escape’s return to Brighton on 15 – 18 May, so let’s take a closer look at who’s performing.

Lucy Tun

Lucy Tun - Airport Smoking Room (Official Video)

Burmese British polymath Lucy Tun began turning heads in 2018 with the abbreviated moniker LCYTN, releasing spacey, shapeshifting bedroom pop. Feeling lost in her last year of university as the pandemic struck, as well as uprisings in her familial home of Myanmar, created a confused sense of identity. Leaving LCYTN for the DJ and dance-side of her music pursuits, Tun accepted the full breadth of her name for a new musical chapter, which has seen a prolific stream of hits including the viral smash ‘Kulture Klub’. The last couple of years have surely been intense for the young Londoner, but she seems to be keeping it cool; “Calm down,” she sings on the off-kilter bop ‘ADHD’, “I’m on routе.”

DellaXOZ

DellaXOZ - come again (Official Music Video)

Channelling the grit and energy of Riot Grrrl, the swag of Madchester and Britpop, and the genre-bending prowess of the best of her generation, Daniella Lubasu – aka DellaXOZ – released her debut EP, THE DELLA VARIANT, on her 18th birthday and never looked back. Two years on, the Bolton-born artist has even more strings to her bow, from cathartic indie rock (‘don’t do it!’) to Midwest emo-hyper pop mash ups (‘BORING’).

Fräulein

Fräulein - Wait and See (Official Music Video)

Fräulein are vocalist/guitarist Joni Samuels and drummer Karsten van der Tol – two friends from Northern Ireland and The Netherlands respectively, who met at a party in Bristol. They say their music sounds like a motorcar rally, but while there’s certainly tension, dynamism and percussive heft, this isn’t the kind of music to get drowned out in the sounds of screeching tyres. As their latest double-sider, ‘Feels Like Flying’, shows, the duo have been quickly refining their 90s grungy sound with more intricacies and emotive power. Think Adrienne Lenker covering The Breeders.
