Jam with rapper Lowkey at SWG3

Where? SWG3, 100 Eastvale Pl, Glasgow G3 8QG
When: Wednesday 3 September
Rapper and activist Lowkey is here in Glasgow this September on his Soundtrack to the Struggle 3 tour, where he’ll do meet and greets after the show. It’s not often that a performer will speak out so openly against war and racism with a penchant to discuss global political issues boldly and repeatedly across not just social media, but their music too.
There’s nothing low-key about Lowkey. He’s not beyond plastering the unsettling reality of the war against Palestine on his Instagram feed, using ferociously upsetting images to plead with the world to do more against the ongoing genocide. His music, including songs ‘Palestine Will Never Die’ and ‘The Killing of Corbynism’, are defiant protests of their own. One thing’s for sure: it won’t be a quiet night.

Hit the club at DEVISION REDUX’s thumping dance party

Where? 14 Midland Street, Glasgow, G1 4PP, Great Britain
When: Friday 5 September
It may not be explicitly a dance party, but you’ll certainly get your fair share of boogieing at this head banging performance by DEVISION REDUX. Think electronic club beats for this one – somewhere to let off steam on a Friday night somewhere other than Cathouse or The Garage, for a change.
This is an experimental project put together by singer SteWen Keth, the brains behind the German synth-pop group DE/VISION, and his musical partner Daniel Myer. What’s the difference between DEVISION REDUX and DE/VISION, you may ask? Well, DEVISION REDUX is an extension of the original band, this time adding a more minimalistic lens over DE/VISION’s music. If you’re after something firmly in the modern techno bracket, this gig is definitely for you.

Learn about William Wallace through rap at A Play, a Pie and a Pint – Wallace
Where? Oran Mor, Byres Rd, Glasgow G12 8QX
When: Monday 1 – Saturday 6 September
We all know Braveheart, right? But we can probably all agree that the way William Wallace’s story is told through that film is a little, well, dated. Fortunately, there’s another – and dare we say more creative – way of learning about the life and death of Wallace alongside the stories belonging to Robert the Bruce, Edward Longshanks, and Marion Braidfute.
The play of Wallace, written by Rob Drummond and Dave Hook, depicts real historical fact through the medium of hip hop. So, sit down to lunch at Oran Mor’s recurring A Play, a Pie and a Pint series and this time submit yourself to this inventive piece of art celebrating the story of a true Scottish icon.
