Following its sold out and celebrated run at the National Theatre, The Lehman Trilogy will transfer to London’s Piccadilly Theatre in May 2019 for a limited 12-week season.

Recently nominated for Best Play at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, the play will see Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles reprise the original roles in the Sam Mendes directed play.

Mendes, who recently directed the award winning The Ferryman, directs the story of a family and a company that changed the world, told in tree parts on a single evening.

The play delves into almost two centuries of family history, from the arrival of a young man from Bavaria in New York in 1844 to the establishment of their film, Lehman Brothers, and its bankruptcy that triggered the largest financial crisis in history.

Written by Stefano Massini and adapted by Ben Power, The Lehman Trilogy promises an extraordinary feat of storytelling, with Beale, Godley and Miles portraying the brothers.

The Lehman Trilogy premiered at Milan’s Piccolo Theatre in 2015; the final production by Artistic Director Luca Ronconi. Admired by Mendes, he commissioned Ben Power (Deputy Artistic Director at the National Theatre) to create a new version.

“The Lehman Trilogy was developed over three years without the constraint of a schedule, or even a destination,” Mendes says. “I was allowed time to find its form, and to build a wonderful team with which to make it.

“One of the chief joys has been to work across borders with two great writers, and to invite three of the finest actors of their generation to work with us.

We are indebted to the National Theatre and the Park Avenue Armory for their unstinting support throughout, and I couldn’t be more excited to show it to New York audiences and to be extending our London life in the West End.”

The play arrives in the West End following its New York debut, previewing from 11 May 2019 following The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
