Sand In The Sandwiches to arrive in the West End

The celebration of John Betjeman will reach the Theatre Royal Haymarket at the end of May 2017.

Following a sell out tour, Sand In The Sandwiches will bring veteran actor Edward Fox to the Theatre Royal Haymarket, depicting poet laureate John Betjeman.

Fox brings his eccentricity to life, celebrating the passion and sense of purpose in Betjeman’s iconic poetry. The BAFTA Award winning actor appeared in The Day of the Jackal, A Bridge Too Far and Oh! What a Lovely War.

Directed by Gareth Armstrong, the one-man play has toured the UK since opening in 2016, and will run in Northampton before it reaches the West End for one week.

“It is lovely to be returning to one of the great theatres of the world and to the role of John Betjeman, even now at the age of 80,” Fox says. “All of us involved are working to magnify the voice of one of the greatest minds in England. Betjeman once said that ‘poetry is life’, and I agree. You can’t live without it.”

The Theatre Royal currently hosts The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?, which takes a break for Sand In The Sandwiches, before returning on the 5 June 2017.
