Pinter’s The Birthday Party comes the London
Harold Pinter's classic play is set to have a stunning revival in London's West End next year.
First written in 1957, The Birthday Party is Harold Pinter’s second full-length play. It first appeared at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1958 starring Willoughby Gray and Beatrix Leahmann.
The new production – which opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre next January – stars Toby Jones, Zoë Wanamaker and Stephen Mangan.
The Birthday Party tells the story of Stanley Webber, the only lodger at Meg and Petey Boles’ sleepy seaside boarding house.
Yet, the unsettling arrival of enigmatic strangers Goldberg and McCann disrupts the humdrum lives of the inhabitants and their friend Lulu, and mundanity soon becomes menace when a seemingly innocent birthday party turns into a disturbing nightmare.
As truth and alliances hastily shift, this brilliantly mysterious dark-comic masterpiece perfectly illustrates the dramas that surround the every day.
With a cast featuring a trio of Olivier Award winners, this is a show not to be missed.
Golden Globe Award-nominated Toby Jones plays Stanley Webber, while the Tony Award-nominated Zoë Wanamaker CBE portrays his landlady, Meg. Episodes star and Tony Award nominee Stephan Mangan plays Goldberg.
Creatively, critically-acclaimed director Ian Rickson leads the charge to bring this new production of Pinter’s landmark play back to the West End. Rickson previously directed productions of the playwrights classics Betrayal and Old Times.
