Girl From The North Country to return to the West End

The musical based on Bob Dylan's work will take to the Gielgud Theatre for 8 weeks only.

Based on the music of Bob Dylan, Girl From The North Country will return to the West End for a limited run at London’s Gielgud Theatre.

The production last ran in the West End at the Noel Coward Theatre in early 2018, having transferred from its original home at London’s The Old Vic. It secured two coveted Olivier Awards for performances by Shirley Henderson and Sheila Atim, as well as nominations for Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music.

Written and directed by acclaimed playwright Conor McPherson, Girl From The North Country delves into family and love, following the comings and goings at a time-weathered guesthouse in 1934 America.

The heartbreaking tale unfolds to the reimagined music of influential stateside singer, songwriter and author Bob Dylan.

The eight week run at the Gielgud Theatre will welcome Katie Brayben as Elizabeth Laine. Brayben received an Olivier Award for her portrayed of Carole King in the biographical musical Beautiful.

She’ll be joined by Donald Sage Mackay as Nick Laine, having last featured in True West alongside Kit Harrington and Jonny Flynn. Anna Jane Casey will play Mrs Burke fresh from her performances in the UK tour of Calendar Girls, with Rachel John cast as Mrs Neilson. John’s West End credits include Hamilton, The Bodyguard, Memphis and many more.

The confirmed cast also includes Daniel Bailey (Ensemble), Colin Bates (Gene Laine), Katie Brayben (Elizabeth Laine), Anna Jane Casey (Mrs Burke), Nicholle Cherrie (Ensemble), David Ganly (Mr Burke), Steffan Harri (Elias Burke), David Haydn (Ensemble), Rachel John (Mrs Neilsen), Sidney Kean (Mr Perry), Finbar Lynch (Reverend Marlow), Donald Sage Mackay (Nick Laine), Gloria Obianyo (Marianne), Ferdy Roberts (Dr Walker) Wendy Somerville (Ensemble), Gemma Sutton (Katherine Draper) and Shaq Taylor (Joe Scott) and Alan Vicary (Ensemble).

The Old Vic production of Girl From The North Country has received high praise since premiering in 2017, and the news of its West End return follows the announcement of a new Broadway production opening in February 2020.

The Observer called the production the “No.1 theatre show of the year”, with the Standard declaring it “magnificent” and The Guardian labelling the musical “astonishing”.

Girl From The North Country will return to London’s West end for eight weeks only from 10 December 2019.
