A brand new musical based on the life of Bob Marley is set to open in London next year.

Get Up! Stand Up! The Bob Marley Story will open at the Lyric Theatre, London on Saturday 6 February 2021 on what would have been the music icon’s 76th birthday.

The musical will feature Marley’s iconic hits performed live on stage and welcomes a book by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot The Musical, Network) who uses the musician’s lyrics to tell the extraordinary story as to how he became one of the world’s most influential recording artists.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bob Marley is widely credited as putting reggae music on the map. The legendary musician, known for hit singles such as No Woman, No Cry; Three Little Birds, I Shot The Sherrif and many more, fiercely promoted Jamicain culture across the globe until his untimely death aged just 36.

The role of Bob Marley in the forthcoming production will be played by accomplished writer and performer Arinzé Kean, whose recent one man play Misty ran at the Bush Theatre before transferring to the West End. Critically acclaimed, Kean received two Olivier Award nominations for Misty – Best Actor and Best New Play.

On playing Bob Marley, Kean comments: “I feel absolutely honoured to be able to take on this role. It is not only an honour to be able to spread Bob Marley’s message further, but to get to be him for a little while is a lifelong dream come true. I grew up on his music and his mantra and he has been one of my role models since I was a child. I feel as if he’s in my DNA. He’s the man, I love him.”

Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Story will be directed by Dominic Cooke (Follies, Clybourne Park).

Tickets to see Get UP, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Story will be available from April 2020. Keep up to date at Ticketmaster.co.uk
