Watch Dreamgirls’ Nicole Dennis perform on The Voice
She was joined on stage by Jennifer Hudson for the powerful 'And I Am Telling You'.
With Dreamgirls preparing to close in London’s West End at the end of this week, Effie understudy Nicole Dennis has propelled the musical firmly back into the headlines with a show-stopping performance on ITV’s The Voice.
Having wowed three of the judges with her blind audition, Dennis revealed her West End role, prompting now-mentor Jennifer Hudson to join her on stage for a powerful rendition of And I Am Telling You.
Hudson, who took home a coveted Academy Award for her role in the feature film version of Dreamgirls, was visibly in awe of Dennis’ vocal ability, at one point stopping herself to push the contestant further into the spotlight.
The reaction to Dennis’ performance has been nothing short of celebratory, with many declaring the musical performer the series’ winner after only one show.
Dreamgirls closes at London’s Savoy Theatre on Saturday 12 January 2019, having opened back in December 2016.
The musical follows The Dreams, Effie, Lorrell and Deena, as they navigate the turbulent 1960s, a revolutionary time in American music history.
Taking on the musical rollercoaster ride through a world of fame, fortune and the ruthless realities of show business, it tests the friendship of Effie White and her fellow singers.
With music by Henry Krieger and a book by Tom Eyen, the fictitious plot is built around the real-life exploits of The Supremes, The Shirelles and more aspiring 1960s acts.
The musical also includes the equally massive Listen.
Nicole Dennis forms part of the ensemble as well as the understudy for the lead role, shared by Marisha Wallace, Moya Angela and Karen Mav.
Final tickets for Dreamgirls are available now, with best availability from Monday until Thursday this week. Grab them through Ticketmaster.co.uk.
