Barbarians prepare to take on Fiji at Twickenham

Find out more from the players and coach Eddie Jones.

Barbarian will face off against Fiji in a one-off match at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday 16 November 2019.

The match will mark South African players Jantjies, Am and Mapimpi’s Barbarians debuts after each played in all six of South Africa’s matches at the most recent Rugby World Cup.

Meanwhile, Mtawarira, who is South Africa’s most capped prop will be making appearance number three for the invitational side.

The game is the first international rugby match staged in the UK following the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, which saw South Africa run out as winners after a 32-12 defeat of Eddie Jones’ England side.

In a twist of fate, the England head coach will lead the Barbarians team when they face Fiji later this year.

The match will mark the first time the coach has taken charge of the Barbarians, who are affectionately known as the Baa-Baas.

Jones comments: “It’s a huge honour to be invited to coach the Barbarians. The club perfectly embodies the values and traditions of the sport and fans can expect to see an exciting match between two sides who like to play end-to-end running rugby.”

During a 25 year long career, Jones has coached some of the game’s greatest ever players in some of the sport’s biggest occasions. Career highlights include coaching Australia to the 2003 World Cup final and leading England to their first Six Nations Grand Slam title for 13 years in 2016.

Taking place just two weeks after the Rugby World Cup final, a bumper crowd is expected at Twickenham to take in Barbarians against Fiji.

The last time the two sides met at Twickenham was in November 2013, where over 68,000 fans witnessed the Barbarians defeating Fiji 43-19.
