Matilda celebrates 15 years in the West End
The RSC’s beloved Roald Dahl adaptation is now officially a classic, as it becomes the 10th longest running West End musical of all time
Matilda Wormwood has reached another milestone. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s West End production of Matilda The Musical has entered its 15th year in London, securing its place as the 10th longest-running musical in West End history. Tickets are now on sale until January 2027 – a run that will take the revolting children and their evil headmistress closer to two decades.
More than 12 million people have now seen the show across 100 cities worldwide, with no sign of slowing down. First staged in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2010, the RSC’s mischievous take on Roald Dahl’s heroine transferred to the Cambridge Theatre, where critics and audiences quickly fell in love. By the following year it was rewriting the Olivier Awards record book, scooping seven prizes, before taking Broadway by storm with four Tonys and a special award for the quartet of child actors rotating in the title role. Since then, Matilda has chalked up tours across North America, Australasia, South Africa, China and the UK, while a Korean-language production in Seoul in 2018/19 marked its first non-English translation. In 2023, it debuted in Japan and launched an international touring version that roamed from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi.

The RSC’s co-artistic directors, Tamara Harvey and Daniel Evans, credit the enduring power of the production to the magic of the storytelling. “After its premiere 15 years ago in Stratford-upon-Avon, Matilda Wormwood’s genius is still teaching us that even if you’re little you can do a lot,” they said, adding that the character’s resilience “continues to inspire and bring joy to new generations of children and families”.
Edie McCaig and Emilia Shefford recently joined Suki Hillier and Mia Rogers in the coveted title role, sharing the West End stage with Jon Robyns as the fearsome Miss Trunchbull, Tiffany Graves and Neil McDermott as the ghastly Wormwoods, and Eve Norris as the ever-patient Miss Honey.
The creative team remains the same: a Dennis Kelly book, Tim Minchin’s spiky songs, direction from Matthew Warchus and designs by Rob Howell, with choreography, orchestrations, lighting, sound and illusions handled by a trusted team of RSC regulars.
