German based singer and songwriter Mogli released her sophomore album Wanderer last year. It was borne out of her year-long adventure with partner and filmmaker Felix Starck, which saw the pair travel through North America in a converted 40-foot school bus. Soundtracking his film Expedition Happiness, the song titles represent the isolated wilderness, a notion that’s also mirrored in Mogli’s sound. Some reference specific places and geographical features. Others channel specific feelings.

The release of the record saw Mogli make waves in her native Germany, climbing the album chart with her pure escapism. Wanderer offers an introspective look at the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. It’s in equal parts a reflection of herself and the sprawling landscapes that influences her sound.

Her music draws from the beauty of nature. Dominated by her breathy vocals, Mogli captures the fundamental elements of folk yet injects it with bold instrumentals. Wanderer floats between dense and light, as if transitioning from the confines of the forest to sprawling fields. All the while it’s impossible to escape the earthy atmosphere.

Removed from the confines of traditional folk, the likes of Alaska carry a strong ethereal feel, drawing comparisons to Massive Attack and their ilk. Road Holes finds a suitably more grounded sound, playing in part with nods to American country. Both are indicative of Mogli’s experimental yet subtle sound.
