YBN Cordae, real name Cordae Dunston, was raised on hip-hop. On Bad Idea, his collaboration with Chance The Rapper and the lead single from Cordae’s forthcoming debut album, this affinity to his forefathers is clear. Far from the forceful delivery of his contemporaries, the North Carolina born rapper fills his sound with the groove that underpins those that came before. Cordae simultaneously blends his forward-thinking passion with a retrospective respect. It’s no surprise therefore that his imminent album, The Lost Boy, has attracted the likes of Pusha T, Meek Mill, Anderson .Paak, and Chance, all of whom make guest appearances.

Now part of the YBN collective – a group of young rappers with a shared love of gaming – Cordae released his first three mixtapes under the moniker Entendre before teaming up with YBN Nahmir and YBN Almighty Jay in LA. Comprising an ever-growing roster of artists outside of the three core members, YBN dropped their mixtape last year. Across its 23 tracks (including Cordae’s Kung Fu), the collective feature rap giants Wiz Khalifa, Machine Gun Kelly and Gucci Mane, among others.

Consistently releasing their own material too, 2019 has already seen Cordae unveil the more ferocious, bass driven Have Mercy and the swagger-filled Locationships. The latest material follows his viral hits, including his rendition of Eminem’s My Name Is and Old N*****s, a response to J Cole’s 1985. All boast viewing figures well into the tens of millions across his own and WORLDSTARHIPHOP’s YouTube channels.

With live dates having already included support for the internationally renowned Juice Wrld, YBN Cordae now has his sights set on the UK. At the time of writing the rapper is set to perform at London’s O2 Academy Islington and at Ireland’s Longitude Festival. With the strength of the YBN collective behind him and an ever-growing global fanbase eagerly anticipating his debut album release, this is unlikely to be the last time YBN Cordae graces UK shores.
