Canadian singer Elise LeGrow performed a stripped back version of Going Back To Where I Belong live at Ticketmaster HQ in London ahead of her recent live shows in England’s capital.

The track is taken from LeGrow’s debut album, Playing Chess, released in February 2018. Taking on Chicago’s Chess Records catalogue, the album reimagines some of the most iconic soul and jazz songs in history.

Playing Chess grew out of Elise LeGrow’s love for Etta James, a musical infatuation which led the Canadian native to discover the plethora of artists signed to the label. As well as James, the album sees her take on music by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and deeper cuts from the label’s repertoire.

Going Back Where I Belong was originally recorded by the comparably little known Sugar Pie DeSanto, a New York born RnB artist with Filipino heritage. In the ’60s, under the name Peylia Parham, De Santo celebrated writing credits with Shena DeMell, releasing a duet with Etta James herself, Do I Make Myself Clear.

LeGrow herself draws inspiration from the past and her contemporaries, listing the likes of Janelle Monae and Amy Winehouse on her Facebook page. She grew up surrounded by the influences of the Chicago scene, thanks in part to her father and grandfather, as well as a love of indie rock and international superstars such as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

Playing Chess, a clear homage to the past, looks forward with LeGrow’s distinctive charm and subtle grit.
