Listen: Slow Club’s Christmas playlist
It wouldn’t be Christmas without Slow Club’s annual Christmas show. It all started in 2008 when they played a one-off festive gig at the Union Chapel in Islington – before they had even released an album – and over the past six years the shows have progressively grown in stature.
This year is no different as the Sheffield duo will continue the tradition at Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Dec 10. As you’d expect, the show will feature tracks from their back catalogue but alongside a combination of Christmas covers and their own Christmas songs.
Seeing as they’re so well versed in all things Christmassy, we asked them to put together a Christmas playlist for us – check out their picks below:
Rebecca:
1. All I Want For Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey
Surely the all time greatest Christmas song? I could listen to her sing anything but when it’s huge, over the top, relentless and with such a lovely bridge melody? Nailed it. Who even wrote this song anyway?!
2. New Year – Sugababes
Really gorgeous classic Sugababes production with some actually quite great melancholy lyrics.
3. Baby Please Come Home – Darlene Love
Loved this song so much we covered it. Love the Phil Spector production, natch, but the lyrics are really what I love the most. As lovely and wonderful as Christmas is, if you’re missing someone or something already it trebles the pain and times-es it by fairy-lit loneliness. Songs that address this are much more realistic and enjoyable to me than wishing it was Christmas every day. That would be awful, imagine how chubby I’d be.
Charles:
1. David Bowie and Bing Crosby – Little Drummer Boy
I love it that this happened! Christmas magic!
2. Spice Girls – Two Become One
Not sure if this was a Christmas song but I does make me feel Christmassy.
3. Paul McCartney – Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time.
Just got into Macca. He’s alright int he?
4. E17 – Stay Now

I like to remember this song rather than listening to it. Does it still sound amazing?
5. Hot Club De Paris – Will You Still Be In Love With Me Next Year?
Hot Club are one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. Really cheery Christmas number.
Slow Club’s Christmas show takes place on December 10 at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London. Tickets are available from here.
